If you’re a woman who likes Burritos & Beer, here you’ll get both for a great cause!

Please join us at boloco Pearl Street on Thursday, June 9th, as we enjoy burritos & brews to raise funds for Team Boloco who will be riding The Prouty on Saturday, July 9th. The Prouty is a 30/50/100 mile bike ride to benefit the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.Boloco’s head chef, Jason Hutchinson, will be preparing boloco favorites in addition to some newly inspired flavors yet to hit the menu! And our good friend, Todd, from Samuel Adams Brewery will be pairing our burritos with the Sam Adams Summer Styles Variety Pack. Finally, Food Should Taste Good will be on hand sampling a variety of chips, including their addictive Cheddar flavor! While the portions will be on the “disturbingly small” side, we promise you’ll leave with a belly full of snacks, beer, and burritos. What could be better than that?

Tickets are $25, plus fees. Get them here!

Count Chocula welcomes you to ChocoCon 2011! Lady Godiva and Billy Wonka have come together to announce their newest creations. Their innovations are the Golden Ticket to chocolate success!

But not everybody is at ChocoCon to celebrate deliciousness. Strawberry Shortcake doesn’t like the new creations. She prefers treats to be more natural and wholesome. Larry, the Oompa-Loompa also shows up with more than catchy songs to share. He has a big surprise that he’s waited years to share. They have every reason to make things difficult for Billy and Godiva. But are they angry enough to murder?

Help Wonka sort through the clues and interrogate the suspects. Find out who was willing to go so far as to cause a… DEATH BY CHOCOLATE!

More details can be found here.

As I always do when someone wants me to try their product for free, I responded with an enthusiastic, YES! And next thing you know, a case of Hint Water was placed on my doorstep.

The first thing I noticed when I checked out the packaging is that right on the label it says – ZERO CALORIES and NO SUGAR OR SWEETENERS. Admittedly, I kind of deflated a little bit. I’m a famed lover of all things sweet (right now I have a box of Lemonheads in my desk drawer), so I knew I’d have to change my mindset before the first taste. I went to the website and read the product description:

“The idea behind Hint is simple: nature’s original refreshment accentuated with natural flavor. With no sugar or sweeteners, Hint is a refreshing alternative to soda, juice and other sweetened drinks and it tastes great.”

“Okay. So, I’m expecting water, basically,” I thought and put the case in the refrigerator to chill as I did my household chores.

Here are the flavors they left me to taste: Raspberry-Lime, Blackberry, Mango-Grapefruit and Watermelon.

A few hours later, parched from vacuuming, I taste-tested Raspberry-Lime, and I have to admit that the name Hint Water is right on the money. It tasted like I was drinking water straight out of my Brita filter with just the tiniest bit of raspberry-lime juice squeezed in there. Well, nobody squeezes a raspberry to put into a glass of water, but you know what I mean. I can imagine sitting on my porch in the Spring – if Spring ever truly gets here – with an ice cold glass of Hint Water next to me, reading my favorite book.

If I had to pick a favorite flavor, I’d say that Blackberry was the best. Of course, I’ll eat an entire carton of blackberries in one sitting (and give myself a tummy-ache!), so it’s not a great leap to think I’d love it. In fact, all of the flavors were great, but I really approached “Watermelon” with trepidation. Anything watermelon-flavored generally makes me want to vomit – especially gum. But, this was definitely drinkable.

So if you’re a health nut, or you just need to add a little flavor to your water, check out Hint Water. I’ve now finished my case and I’m definitely going to pick up some more on my next trip to Whole Foods.

Hint is sold nationally through Whole Foods and Starbucks. Here in New England, you can also find Hint at Market Basket, Roche Brothers, Stop&Shop’s Natural Food section, Donelan’s, Crosby’s, Trucchi’s, and some 7 Eleven and Tedeschi’s.

Take a look at their website for more info: www.drinkhint.com

Over the course of his career, Dale Chihuly has revolutionized the art of blown glass, moving it into the realm of large-scale sculpture and establishing the use of glass—inherently a fragile but also magical material—as a vehicle for installation and environmental art. This exhibition of new and archival works represents the breadth and scope of the artist’s creative vision over the last four decades.

The exhibition will include installations such as Lime Green Icicle Tower, to be installed in the Shapiro Courtyard; a Persian Wall; a Chandelier room with six examples, including the Chiostro di Sant’Apollonia Chandelier; and a room containing a magnificent Mille Fiori installation that is nearly sixty feet long.

By 1965, Dale Chihuly was already captivated by the process of glassblowing. Influenced by an environment that fostered the blurring of boundaries separating the various arts, as early as 1967 Chihuly was using neon, argon, and blown glass forms to create room-sized installations of his glass. Although his work ranges from the single vessel to indoor and outdoor site-specific installations, he is best known for his multipart blown compositions. Based in Seattle, Washington, Chihuly works with a team of glassblowers, a process that allows him to work on a grand scale and to explore and experiment with color, design, and assemblage. “Chihuly: Through the Looking Glass” provides an opportunity to see and explore the full range of his artistic achievements by immersing visitors in the beautiful and enchanting environments created through his extraordinary vision.

March 31 – May 2, 2011

Panopticon Gallery is delighted to announce our Polaroid themed group exhibition, Instant Connections, co-curated by Independent Curator, Photographer, Advertising Creative Director and former Executive Director of the Photographic Resource Center Jim Fitts.

Instant Connections brings together some of the most noted photographers who have made enormous contributions to the world of photography through their use of Polaroid film coupled with some contemporary and emerging artists. They include:

Andy Warhol, Chuck Close, Vik Muniz, William Wegman, David Levinthal, James Casebere, John O’Reilly, Stephen Sheffield, Olivia Parker, Marie Cosindas, Ellen Carey, Arno Rafael Minkkinen, John Reuter, Bill Burke, Tom Baril, Len Gittleman, Anna Tomczak, Elsa Dorfman, Amanda Means, Rick Ashley, Mimi Youn, Nicholas Winter, Sue-Yee Leung, John Keough, Robert Siegelman, Mark Younkle, Samuel Quinn, and a few surprises!

The contribution that Polaroid has made to fine arts photography is both incredibly broad and deep, and no single exhibition could do it complete justice,“ Jim Fitts, co-curator states. “Instant Connections focuses on bringing together a small number of photographers whose work demonstrates just how diverse a medium Polaroid was. There is no question that the work of each artist in the exhibition stands on its own, but it is fascinating to compare and contrast it with the work of the other artists in the exhibition.”

Visit Panopticon’s website for more information.

On Thursday, March 24 at 7pm, the Coolidge Corner Theatre will present a special preview screening of Orgasm Inc., a much buzzed-about documentary by Liz Canner that chronicles Big Pharma’s pursuit of the holy grail: a female version of Viagra. Canner will introduce the film and take part in a post-screening discussion with Paula Doress-Worters, co-author of the original Our Bodies, Ourselves and subsequent editions of the iconic book, Harvard Medical School professor Susan Bennett, MD, and Kim Airs, sex educator and founder of Grand Opening! sex boutique. Both Dr. Bennett and Kim Airs appear in the film.

Canner’s biting yet highly entertaining film follows drug companies’ campaign to get the FDA to recognize Female Sexual Dysfunction as a medical disorder, and their race to be the first to market with an FDA-approved product – be it pill, patch, nose spray, cream or other delivery device. The promised cure: “normal” sexual function and orgasm. At stake: billions of dollars in profits.

The problem, as the film demonstrates, is that there is no clear definition of FSD. The pharmaceutical industry has lumped together a grab-bag of women’s sexual problems – some physical, some psychological, some emotional – under the FSD umbrella, and drug manufacturers are competing to formulate a fix-all solution. Not that pharmaceutical companies are the only ones that claim to hold the key to female sexual pleasure. The film also highlights the increased use of cosmetic procedures that claim to produce designer vaginas and an invention called the Orgasmatron – a surgically implanted spinal-cord stimulator designed to help women achieve orgasm

Taking a playful approach to a serious subject – the commodification of women’s pleasure centers – Orgasm Inc. is a powerful look inside the pharmaceutical industry and the marketing campaigns that are attempting to change how we think about our bodies, health, illness, and desire.

Tickets to the March 24 preview screening of Orgasm Inc. and panel discussion are $9.00 general admission/$6.00 Coolidge Corner Theatre members and seniors. Tickets are available online at www.coolidge.org or at the Coolidge box office, 290 Harvard Street , Brookline . Orgasm Inc. will officially open at the Coolidge on March 25. Check the website for screening times.
